For this reason, it’s important to measure all posts. You don’t need to measure that entire post, just the edges surrounding the end grain. For the plastic fence post caps to fit, the edges around the post’s end grain should be approximately 3 5/8″ by 5 5/8″. If you need to make adjustments for the plastic caps to fit, ensure that the posts’ edges won’t go beyond the caps’ 1/2″ inner edge/lip.
